It was a good night for Richard Somerset at the Welwyn Track League on Friday 12th August. After a delayed start due to rain Richard came third in the B group 10 lap scratch race and fourth in the 10 lap handicap. Just as the B group started the 10 lap handicap it began to rain and the evening's racing was cancelled.

Welwyn Track League - Friday 26th May

It was a great day for the North Road at the Welwyn Track League meeting on Fri 26th May. Competing for the club were Tony Bradford and George Olive in the A’s and Richard Somerset, Joe Berritt, Trevor burke and Frank Rawlins in the B’s.

The senior events began with the class B ten lap scratch. The bunch stayed together and in the sprint for the line Trevor just pipped Richard for fourth place. The next event was the ten lap scratch for A riders. Again the group stayed together and in a fast finish George achieved third place with Tony finishing in the bunch.

In the ten lap block pursuit for B riders Trevor, Frank and Richard were placed in the group for even number riders and Joe was in the odd number group. From the start the evens group was better organised and as a result the odds group soon disintegrated under the pressure. With a lap to go Tim Chandler from the Welwyn Wheelers had a small gap off the front. Costa Perides chased and Richard grabbed his wheel. In the sprint Costa was first followed by Tim, Trevor and Richard. Trevor was disqualified for crossing the white line so Richard was promoted to third place.

George was fifth in the ten lap block handicap, Tony finished in the bunch.

The next event was the Devil for odd number B riders. Joe was competing for the North Road and in only his first season of track racing he placed an excellent second.

In the Devil for even riders Richard and Trevor managed to stay in the group until the bell lap at which point Frank was eliminated and five riders were left to fight it out. Trevor quickly got a gap and won the sprint. Richard came third.

George then came fifth in the ten lap points race for A riders.

The last event of the evening was, as usual the ten mile for both A and B riders. The B group started the race half a lap ahead of the A’s and after approximately twelve laps the groups came together. Trevor and Frank managed to stay with the main bunch and George took an excellent third place in the sprint for the line.

All in all a great achievement by the North Road, with seven top four placings. It was just a shame that were so few other club members showing their support.

Welwyn Track League - Friday 12th May

Friday the 12th of May was a special day for me at the track league. The North Road were there in force on the track and off - great to see June Lacey enjoying the late evening sun shine.

John Turton NRCC 2nd claim was tearing up the B group and with such good results he will be on for promotion to the As. John was second to a fast finishing Costa Peiredes in the 10 lap scratch and 1st in the B Devil. His strong efforts in the Block pursuit were to naught with a fast finishing evens team. Joseph and Trevor were also active in the Bs but not so prominent.

In the As George Olive featured in the 10 lap scratch sprint but a twitchy bunch allowed one man away for the win and the ensuing melee was difficult to negotiate for George.

The Hare and Hounds saw Ian Clarke, Neil Lewis, Shaun Banister and me out half a lap ahead of a fast chasing pack. At the half way mark Neil missed a wheel on the change and never regained contact, Shaun Banister was next to go with 2 laps left. ! did a long pull into the wind and then after Ian had done a further 1/4 took to the front again. With 100m to go the yells of the crowd suggested Brian Taylor might just be on my tail but with a final sprint I crossed the line a bike length ahead of him and Joel Stewart.

The points race began fast and I spent the first four laps just keeping pace. As the bunch faltered down the back straight David Langlands and I both had the same idea,and jumped away; I took 1st and him 2nd. George Olive, sensing an opportunity, took 3rd and a lap later joined David and I 1/2 a lap up. The three of us took turns smoothly with George letting me compete the sprints against David. Despite some hard chasing the pack never caught us and the three of us took the final sprint; Dave, Tony, George. Dave and I were on equal points but as he crossed the line first after 10 laps, he won. I was second and George 4th only 1 point down from 3rd, Joel Stewart.

Rain prevented the 10 miler from starting - I'm not sure I could have competed and am happy to be able to savour such exciting racing.

With Frank, Andy and Roger considering joining the league we need more supporters to take their places at the barriers to cheer us on.
