Club Hardriders, 3 laps of Bayford circuit, 17.2 miles - Sunday 8th October

Thirteen North Roaders and one guest rider was ready to tackle two laps of the Brickendon Green circuit, but with a broken water mains, and traffic lights up Robin Nest Hill the circuit was changed to use three laps of the Bayford Lane circuit. This did not stop Dave Candy taking 5 minutes 16 seconds out of second place Ashley Glass. In third position came Nick Ison, he finished 63 seconds behind Ashley. Richard Somerset still managed to finish despite puncturing, but unluckily for Jim Ewers, he punctured and had to retire from the race.

Lea Valley CC comet 25 - Sunday 1st October

In the Lea Valley Cycling Club Comet 25-mile Time Trial on the E1/25B Dave Candy, Leigh Taylor and Ashley Glass were the North Road Cycling Club’s representatives. In a gale force wind – forcing 15 non starters – with a strong head win on the return leg making the times slow. Dave finished with a time of 1:01:04 coming in 9th position. Leigh placed 18th with a time of 1:07:55, became the second lady finisher, Ashley came past the time keeper in 20th place with a time of 1:09:56. The winner was Gary Poole (API Metrow) in 58:00.

Andover Wheelers 20 - Sunday 17th September

Dave Candy came back to the P613 and rode the Andover Wheelers 25 and finished in 1.01.03

Andover Wheelers 10 - Saturday 16th September

Leigh Breaks the Club Record again

Three members of the North Road: Leigh Taylor, Dave Candy and Alan Harvey rode in the Andover Wheelers '10' on the Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire (P613) course. Leigh rode her PB and broke the North Road ladies 10 record again, this time by 30 seconds. Leigh holds the Ladies 25 and 50 club records. Dave rode his PB in 21.47 and Alan finished in 23.41.

Colchester Rovers W.F. Johnson Memorial 25 - Saturday 16th September

Ashley Glass represented the North Road in the Colchester Rovers WF Johnson Memorial '25' in the lanes of Tendering near Colchester in Esswx(E7.25B). A pleasing time for Ashley coming past the timekeeper in 1.07.26 and coming second in the handicap.

Icknield 12 Hour - 3rd September

The North Road had one rider in this event – Joe Summerlin riding for the Leicestershire RC – and as it incorporated the Club “12” he was also riding the club event. Annabel and I were marshalling at Wimpole Lodge for an hour from 11.30 am and then from 2.30 pm for about two hours. Although it was warm and sunny we were nearly swept away by gale force winds. Joe appeared and was concerned that he had not seen Gail for some hours, and he was all for packing. Nobody would have blamed any of the riders for calling it a day, but Annabel, I and other watching masochists are made of stern stuff and we all persuaded Joe after some strong words to continue south to Royston again for a second circuit. Two riders were in a class of their own – Michael Broadwith (Arctic Shorter Rochford RT) – who rides the evening “10s” and Ian Butcher who is well known from his rides in the “24” – class makes light work of hard conditions.
After our picnic we transferred to the Wendy Lane junction with the main road from Royston, and we had a chat with Ian Cammish who had packed after 50 miles and had been sent out from home by his eight-year-old son with the exhortation not to be such a wimp! Michael and Ian were still going well, and we were pleased to greet Joe who was his usual cheerful self. After some blackberry picking we went to the event HQ at Biggleswade Rugby Club to meet a crowd of old friends who included Brian and Dianne Thorp with a promise to meet up in the social season.
Michael Broadwith covered 271.57 miles to claim third place (so I understand) in the BBAR competition, Ian Butcher covered 241.38 miles in his first event for six years riding to raise money for a charity, but no other riders beat evens. Joe finished 20th with 180.18 miles, so we have a worthy NRCC “12” Champion. There were 37 entrants, 31 starters and 24 finishers who all deserved a medal for lasting the 12 hours. Considering the very windy weather this was an excellent ride by Joe and he must have paid for his efforts with aching legs and a tired body over the next few days. Never again, may have been the two words cried by Joe as he climbed into bed that night. Joe: leave it to Gail next time as she seems to like hard days such as the NM&HCA “100” on July 9 when she became the VTTA ladies champion after some hours of suffering!

North Road Open 25 - Guilden Morden - Saturday 2nd Sep

North Road Cycling Club held their Memorial Trophy Sporting 25/13 Time Trial, Event 10 of the North London Millennium Trophy on the Guilden Morden circuit. Despite the 25-30 mph wind, three riders managed under the hour, Steve Hunt (Icknield RC/Compomotive Wheels), Andre Dyason (Team Sanjan Design) and Tim Bayley (Arctic Shorter-Rochford RT) in 56:42, 57:46 and 59:25 respectively. Hunt and Dyason also the first and second veteran. Hunt teammate Roger Queen was the first vet on target and the third vet. Dave Candy was the first out of the six host riders. Unfortunately for Dave, he was held up by a large tractor, escorted by a police car, and could not pass the vehicles. Despite this he took the fifth position with a time of 1:00:39. Alan Harvey was the next North Roader, passing the time keeper in 1:08:09, taking 11th position. Richard Somerset came 14th, crossing the finishing line in 1:10:00, the trio took the Fastest Team of three, collecting North Road medals. Nick Ison came in 16th position in 1:11:11 followed by Ashley Glass, arriving five seconds behind in 17th. The sixth North Roader, Michael Bridge, was defeated by the strong cross wind and he retired from the race.

North Middlesex and Herts 50 - Sunday 2nd July

A warm sunny morning found the Club well represented in this “50” which also incorporated the third club event at this distance. As the event progressed the riders experienced hot conditions with the wind helping on the final leg from Baldock to Tempsford on the F1 Course.

Our riders were well pleased with their times. Bruce Metheringham achieved his personal best in 1:59:16. Also riding his PB was Chris Symonds finishing in 2:07:05. Leigh Taylor rode her personal best and broke the North Road ladies club record with 2:09:04. Alan Harvey finished with a time of 2:12:43. Dave Candy did not start, suffering from a throat infection. The winner was Steve Hunt (Icknield RC) in 1:47:17.

Verulam Hilly - Saturday 1st July

I took part in the Verulam Hilly time trial, the latest round of the North London Millennium Trophy series. Due to a lack of marshals the race course was amended from the usual route of one lap of the Codicote road race circuit, up to Hitchin and back along the Lilley Bottom road to Whitwell, to three laps of the road race circuit, a distance of approximately twenty eight miles.

The race was the first day after my return from a week’s holiday in Norfolk so I expected to be fresh and ride well; however the day was hot, very hot. I drank what I thought was plenty of fluid before the race but it turned out not to be enough.

There were only eighteen starters so I hoped to get into the top ten (and therefore a mention in the results in the comic).

On the first lap I deliberately rode in my small ring of 46 to save my legs a little with the intention to push the pace for laps two and three. I completed the lap in a time which I expected to easily surpass for the next two laps. However the moment I put the chain on the big ring I found I had no strength in my legs and just couldn’t go any faster. The second lap was a minute slower than the first. I drunk most of the water in my bottle but it didn’t make any difference to my speed and the third lap was a minute slower again. Basically I was dehydrated. A rider at the finish described the feeling as being slowly anesthetised and I agreed with him.

My time was 1:16:22 and my final position? 11th ! Aah.

Shaftesbury CC 25 (MM Slower than 58:00 LTS) - Saturday 24th June

Dave Candy had a good ride in the Shaftesbury CC 25-mile Time Trial at Sawston, Cambridgeshire and took fourth position, coming past the finishing line in 54:57, only 23 seconds away from the winner, Andrew Beaman (PCA Ciclos Uno), came past the line in 54:20.

RTTC Championship 25 - Sunday 4th June

Dave Candy was the North Road Cycling Club representative in the National 25 Championships at Princethorpe, Warwickshire. He came past the finishing line in 1:00:40 finishing in 101st position. There was a bit of a problem when Chris Newton’s (Recycling.co.uk) time was placed on the board with 50:39. However, after the timekeepers returned to the Headquarters they noticed the wrong time was placed, it should have been 50:59, This relegated him to silver position. The actual winner was Jason MacIntyre (Equipe Velo Ecosse) with a time of 50:43.

Appalling weather conditions failed to dampen the spirits of the five North Road Cycling Club members who lined up for the first Club “25” event of the season at Guilden Morden. The heavy rain didn’t worry Dave Candy who rode his fastest 25 on this course, coming past the finishing line in 1:01:33. In second place, and winner of the handicap competition, was Bruce Metheringham with a time of 1:02:07. He was followed by George Olive, Chris Glithero and Leigh Taylor.

Six North Road members competed in a full field of 120 riders in the Good Friday event. The fastest was Dave Candy, who was given a time of 1.21.58, which included 2 minutes late start. This was unfortunate as he would otherwise have been in the top ten, 3 minutes behind the winner, Tim Bayley of Arctic Shorter Rochford (1.16.13). George Olive, riding the event for the first time, recorded a very good 1.25.05, and Alan Harvey did a very good ride to finish in 1.29.41, a big improvement on his previous best. Alan's daughter Leigh ,(riding for www.agiskoviner.com but still a second claim North Road member), recorded 1.30.00 and the NRCC contingent was completed by Chris Glithero (1.33.36) and Jim Ewers (!.39.26). It should be noted that Jim only rides this event because it starts a mile from his home, and this year's performance was a big improvement as he actually got to the finish!

Icknield Hilly - Cheddington, Bucks Sunday 26th March

Bruce Metheringham, Chris Glithero and Richard Somerset rode the Icknield Hilly sporting course time trial, number two in the Millennium time trial series. John McDowall was due to ride but after cracking his frame at the Cotswolds training and leisure weekend, his replacement bike was not ready for Sunday’s race.

The course started at Ivinghoe, past (but not up) the Beacon, to Dagnall, along the main rode south of Leighton Buzzard, west to Wing and then back to Mentmore. It could be described as rolling rather than hilly.
The morning was warm but windy; it had rained so the ground was damp.

Bruce was first North Roader to start but his race finished soon after it started when a missing marshal at Ivinghoe caused Bruce to go straight on instead of left. Once Bruce realised his mistake he retraced but decided to retire.

Richard had a respectable ride in the conditions, trying hard, to eventually catch Chris for three minutes a couple of miles before the finish. Chris completed his ride in 55.49 the same time as two years ago.

North Road Hardriders - Sunday 26th February

Photos here

Michael Hutchinson (In-Gear Quickvit RT) headed off to Australia and the Commonwealth Games with another North Road Hardriders win to his credit.
Hutchinson, winner in 2005, had a trouble-free ride covering the hilly and undulating 25 miles through the Hertfordshire lanes near Potters Bar in 59-14 to beat runner-up Michael Broadwith (Arctic-Shorter Rochford RT) by 55 seconds.
The day before the event Hutchinson had been in two minds about riding as temperatures fell and snow threatened.
Race day dawned cold but dry and Hutchinson, after over sleeping, made a frantic dash from his Chelsea home to the event to face the timekeeper for a 9.40am start.
Before Hutchinson started interest centred on Richard Prebble (Pinarello RT).
Prebble was making a return to racing after a 4 ½-year lay-off. “We’ve got our house straight now, so I’ve got the time for racing again,” Prebble explained as, watched by his wife, he warmed-up on his turbo for his 9.30am start.
“I started riding last year and rode an Audax type event and enjoyed it and thought I might as well race again.
“I’ve felt good in training, but you can’t tell until you race how you are really going,” Prebble said before heading for the start..
In the six years from 1994 to 1999 Prebble took eight individual national time trial championships from ’10’ to ‘100’ miles. In 1995 he became the first rider to win the `10`, `25` and 50-mile titles in the same season, a feat achieved by Hutchinson last year.
He was also overall winner of the Time Trial Series in 1996 and 1998 and in 1992 he won the North Road Hardriders.
Prebble had no such luck this time, his comeback` race lasting just four miles, a puncture at Newgate Street ending his hopes. “That’s how things go,” Prebble said now having to wait for this weekend’s Alton Two-up to assess his racing form before starting a campaign to chase that third win in the Time Trial Series.
Another past North Road winner had also been brought to a premature stop. Veteran Sid Lovatt (Finsbury Park CC) won the event back in 1964 but this time out Sid’s luck was out a fall at Bayford putting him out.
Ambulanced to hospital Sid was examined and found to have a broken hip. Operated on Sid has had a metal plate fitted to help repair the damage
It was Arctic-Shorter Rochford RT’s new recruit Michael Broadwith who provided the challenge to Hutchinson. A time-check from a club-mate had him 20 seconds up on Hutchinson at Newgate Street but at the finish that lead had turned into a 55 seconds deficit on Hutchinson.
“I’m very pleased with my ride,” Broadwith said as he recovered back in the changing rooms, checking out the result board that showed his team-mates Peter Bissell and Danny Axford in third and fourth places and Tim Bayley in seventh.
“I think it’s going to be a good year for the team,” said Arctic’s Peter Ruffhead who has been busy signing up new riders for the team. Aims include the Rudy Project Series and the shorter time trial championships, especially the team time trial
Paul Holdsworth (Hounslow and District Wheelers) took both the veteran’s prizes, fastest and on standard. “I bet that’s the only time I’ll do that this year,” Holdsworth said.
Leda Cox celebrated her move to her new team, Raphael-Condor, by taking the women’s prize. “The professional team I was with last season (SS Lazio) suddenly folded when they were unable to get sponsors,” Cox said.
“It was too late to get in another foreign pro team so here I am back at home. I’m the only women (in Raphael-Condor), but you don’t need a team to race here.
“I’ll be racing abroad when ever I can, Belgium mostly and after today I’ll be looking at riding the Rudy Project Series, they are the sort of time trials that suit me,” Cox said.
Over the last few years the event has been affected by ice and snow, this year was fine much to event secretary Bruce Metheringham’s delight.
“It is a difficult course with increasing traffic, but for historic reasons we want to keep the event in the same area, it would loose much of its attraction if we moved it some where else,” Metheringham said.
To keep the event going at the level its has attained, with a £350 first prize the North Road is forming the Hardriders Society for supporters of the event to make a financial contribution to its future.
“We are looking at charging a special levy on riders who ride our evening `10s` (500 last year), this will go towards our Hardriders prize list,” Metheringham said.
