Eastern Division Track Championships - Gosling Stadium -
Sat 17th September
It was an excellent day for the North
Road at the Eastern Division Track Championships.
The first event was the team pursuit
where a total of six teams competed in pairs. The North Road team of Trevor
Burke, Tony Bradford, Richard Somerset and George Olive competed second against
the Welwyn Wheelers B Team. After a slow start North Road pulled ahead of the
opposing team. With two laps to go Richard put in a hard turn and was
subsequently dropped by the other three and he tried to hang onto the back of
the group after he swung off. Despite this Trevor, Tony and George rode well and
finished in second place of the six teams.
In the sprint first round George won
his heat, Tony was second and Trevor was third.
In the semi final George won again to
progress to the final, Tony was eliminated in fourth place and Trevor was
eliminated in his repecharge.
In the final George came third to
Roger Bryant and John Saysell.
There were 19 riders competing in the
individual pursuit in 5 heats. Richard Somerset rode a steady race with even
laps and came home in a time of 4:08:25 (25.0 mph). Tony rode an excellent event
winning his heat with ease in a good time of 3:46:34 (27.4 mph) and coming
second overall.
The 10 mile event was competed by
approximately 30 riders and started at a steady pace with every break being
quickly chased down. After 13 laps there was a crash when a Stevenage CC rider
clipped the fence at the top of the banking, crashed and his bike then proceeded
to collide with three other riders. The race was suspended for 10 minutes and
restarted with 22 laps to go. With no-one strong enough to get away in a break
it came down to a sprint. At two laps to go the pace increased and all four
North Roaders were well positioned. On the finish line George came home in an
excellent second place, Trevor rode well to finish in sixth place and Tony and
Richard were in the top 10.

Welwyn Track League - Friday 2nd Sep
George Olive and Trevor Burke were the
only North Road club members riding but this didn’t seem to affect the evenings
results. Out of the seven senior races of the evening points were scored in four
of them.
A late sprint from Trevor in the B group 10 lap scratch saw him take second
place in a tightly contested sprint with Colin Berry (Chequers RC) who just
pipped Trevor buy less than half a wheels length.
In the 10lap scratch for the A group riders George was placed well in the last
lap and managed 3rd from John McClelland (Agiskoviner) and Jason Crombie (Merlin
UK).
George used his usual strategy in the devil, sitting at the back of the group
and using his speed to beat the last riders across the line every lap to avoid
elimination. The final lap had 6 riders sprinting for the placings, Simon
Gaywood (CC Luton) won from a fast finishing Mark Zaschke (Mid Anglia) whilst
George came 4th just behind John McClelland.
The last event of the evening was the 10 mile incorporating the North Middlesex
and Herts track championship for the first rider across the line whose club is
in that area winning. A & B group riders all lined up behind the finishing line
instead of the usual half lap handicap for the B group, this is because
championship races cannot be handicapped.
The race started fast with many riders being instantly dropped, the early primes
made life tough for the weaker riders.
The speed was quick throughout the whole race and although many attacks were
made, none were successful and a bunch sprint was likely. With 3 laps to go the
riders were looking frisky with nobody wanted to do a hard turn and risk
blunting their finishing sprint speed.
All the Agiskoviner riders were well placed as was George. With 2 laps to go
Mike Broadwith (Agiskoviner) put in a monster turn on the front and with John
McClelland and Joel Stewart (both of Agiskoviner) right behind him this was a
perfect lead out, but with half a lap remaining Broadwith’s gas ran out and once
again no one wanted to lead and bunching occurred, Mark Zaschke seized the
opportunity and jumped hard off the front, John McClelland chased but Zaschke
was too quick, George came a close 4th, Joel Stewart beating him by half a bike
length for 3rd .
It was George’s third 4th place in the 10 mile event of the season, once being
the previous week.
It was only after the race when the results were finalised that it was confirmed
that George was the first North Middlesex and Herts rider across the line,
winning the championship. With the Eastern Region Divisional track championships
only 2 weeks away (17th Sep) North Road CC have a good chance of winning medals.

10 mile - 4th
Welwyn Track League - Friday 12th August
A record seven North Roaders took part in the latest round of the Welwyn
Track League. The only notable result was Richard Somerset who came third in the
B group two station handicap.
Welwyn Track League - Friday 5th August
The big man has finally lost
his virginity (track wise that is); and in some style too! With much support
and expert advice from the side line Trevor Burke placed 5th in the
10 lap, 2nd in the block handicap, last man out in the devil and
finished well up in the 10 mile just off my back wheel in the sprint for 7th
place.
Roll on next week. If he
doesn’t watch out he will be in the A’s before the season’s out.
With several of the top men
not present on Friday due to the celebrations earlier in the day over the re
opening of Herne Hill the competition was more favourable for the also-rans.
Tony Bradford was 5th in the 10 lap and block pursuit, scored
points in the points race and finished 7th in the 10 mile. George
Olive also performed well, taking an absolute flier in the points race and
gaining two lap wins before being brought back into the pack.
Welwyn Track League - Friday 29th July
Bunch in 10 lap. 5th in the block handicap having started in a
group of 6, the scratch group made very little inroad into the handicap. I
doubt that they will give us such a big head start next time. Devil, I took
the initiative and led from the front which worked really well until I died,
when every one came past me. 1o mile. I was in the last nine when Joel Stewart
put the hammer down and shelled all bar 6 of us with 5 laps to go.
Still plenty of racing to watch on a Friday night - it was
great to see Derek and Richard spectating and it would be even better if more
came down to give George, John and me a yell of encouragement.Tony

Welwyn Track League - Friday 22nd July
Tony Bradford was the sole representative of
the North Road CC at the Welwyn Track League this evening. With legs still
feeling the effects of riding the etape the 10 lap scratch was a bit of a
challenge and Tony exited with three laps to go. The block pursuit saw an almost
unique result for Welwyn. the odds caught the evens for their half a lap
difference, mostly attributed to Tony Gibb. Tony managed to hold on in the
sprint to take 4th. Tony also raced in the ten lap points race and the 10 mile
event finishing well up in the latter.
LVRC Track meeting - Gosling Stadium, WGC - Wed 15th June
Jim Ewers and Chris Glithero rode the 4th LVRC track meeting at Gosling. Jim
was in good form, hiding in the bunch and surviving until just before the bell
in the Devil Take the Hindmost. His greatest achievement was taking 3rd place
in the 10 mile event, having managed to be part of the leading group of four
riders. Chris was in the chasing group, finishing one lap down in 8th place.

Welwyn Track League - Friday 29th April
Tony Bradford was the only rep of the North Road to take part
in the first Welwyn Track League on Friday. With a number of national
performers joining the usual crowd the pace was bound to be high. The A
league 10 lap showed just how fast racing was to be. Peter Waghorn reported
later that the average speed had been a record 30mph.
With a lap and a half to go in the handicap pursuit Tony tried
an attack as the bunch hesitated. A little naively he found himself trying to
roar Brian Taylor ( who rides at 45mph behind a motor bike for fun) off his
wheel.
2nd claim, Neil Lewis had driven the 2 hours from Kent to
participate too. Neither Neil nor Tony featured in the points but both were
active in the races.
The evening finale was the 10 mile race for A's and B's. The
B's started a 1/2 lap up but were caught by an eager group of As within 4 laps
of the start. Fast smooth racing ensued with Tony making a number of big
efforts on the front to keep the pace high. The race was run off in 20 mins
and 50 seconds.
