Club Hillclimb - New Road, Digswell - Sunday 30th October

Excellent turnout at the Hillclimb

On October 30, 2005 North Road Cycling Club held their last event of the season: the W. A. Palmer Hillclimb Cup. Despite the breeze and the weather forecast of rain (which did not materialise) there was a good turnout of North Roaders, 20 in total rode the event at New Road, Digswell, a popular hill for local cycling clubs.
Competing over three-quarters of a mile, was George Olive. He beat his last year’s time by 21 seconds, climbing by the timekeeper in 2 minutes and 33 seconds, to take his second trophy of the year and equal the club record. He has already won the 2005 Track Cup. He took nine seconds out of Jonathan Appleby and Roger Bishop, both coming past the finishing line in 2 minutes 42 seconds, just pipping Dave Candy by one second, who came fourth.
New members Martin Brown, Fred Lupton, Glyn Teare and Neil Gostick rode their first hill climb for the club.

Last Sunday North Road Cycling Club held their Club Hardriders, two laps of the Brickendon Green Circuit totalling 18.6 miles. On a bright morning, with a little chill in the air, 14 riders competed with 12 from North Road. The first North Roader was David Candy, completed the course with a time of 47:01, coming past the timekeeper in 23:24 for his first lap, followed by 23:37 second time around. Dave took 62 seconds out of the Ken Davis winner, Roger Bishop. His first lap time was 23:42 and second lap 24:20. New member Martin Brown rode his first event for the club crossing the finishing line with a time of 55:12, coming eighth. John Davy returned, after being knocked off his bike back in May, finished in ninth position with a time of 55:42. Chris Glithero and Bruce Metheringham rode a two up with a time of 51:26. They beat their first lap by six seconds. The overall winner was Mark Allen from Whitewebbs with a time of 46:38.

Stevenage CC 2-up, Course F14 11.8 miles - Saturday 1st October

Report from Ian Coles

Unlike some cyclists I have a lot of respect of team time trials, mainly gained by watching the 2004 Tour in Arras and having 9 disc wheels thundering past me in a thunderstorm. With this thought in mind I entered into the Stevenage CC 2-Up at the Guilden Morden with Jonathan Appleby to give TTT a go.

North Road was definitely the predominant Club in the event as it was also represented by Nigel Cameron and Nick Harris, Chris Glithero and Jim Ewers, and Richard Somerset and George Olive. Nigel and Nick had an unfortunate beginning as they punctured on the way to the start and lost over 4 mins, even so still managed a respectable time of 31.98 over the 12 mile course. The next North Road pairing faired better in the blustery conditions and the experienced duo of Chris & Jim posted a 30.46.

We were off towards the end of the field and John started very strongly and I had trouble holding his wheel on a few occasions. After the turn we hit a rainstorm which would make the going treacherous in an individual TT let alone a TTT. We were caught by our 2 minute men just before the turn into last straight and managed to post a 30.04 which we were pleased with.

We turned round and waited for a couple of minutes before the duo of Richard & George stormed through with a time of 29.19 to place them in 9th overall. The event was won by S. Tarry & D. Crease with a time of 26.31 (course record) from Team Sanjan.

I now have more respect than ever for a well drilled 9 man Team as we found 2 of us riding well together was difficult. It is true what the commentators say that you are only as good as your strongest team-mate. I just wish I could say I was the strongest!

British Time Trail Championships - Doncaster - Sat 3rd Sep

Leigh Taylor went up to Yorkshire on Sat to race in the British Time Trial Championships promoted by Holme Valley Wheelers

Report from Leigh

Leigh Taylor travelled up to Doncaster with the Arctic Shorter Rochford team to compete in the British Time Trial Championships, promoted by Holme Valley Wheelers. According to Leigh “it was a hideous course, two laps with a 112 foot ascent to the finish. The hills were evil. It was a real roadies course with lots of red flags out everywhere, on the descents too”. Leigh caught her minute girl after 15 minutes and on the second lap she caught number one (Leigh was number 13). Fifteen riders finished in total and it was won by Julia Shaw (G.S. Strada).

Memorial Trophy 25 - Guilden Morden - Saturday 3rd Sep

This event was the 11th and last event in the North London Millennium Trophy competition.  The course is an exact 25 miles on two laps of a circuit around Guilden Morden in Cambridgeshire.  Stuart Tarry of Team Sanjan Design was the winner in 1.00.05, but the other prizes all went to veterans.  53 year old David Creese, also Team Sanjan Design, was the biggest earner with prizes for 2nd place in 1.00.17, first Veteran and 2nd Veteran on target time.  Steve Clarke, Verulam CC, took 3rd place and 2nd Veteran in 1.00.27 and Ian Brazier, Verulam CC, was 4th and 3rd Veteran in 1.01.07.  The 1st veteran on target time was Roger Porter of Verulam CC in 1.02.36.  Verulam also took the team prize with Steve Clarke, Ian Brazier  and Nick Hay in 3.03.02

Dave Candy did an excellent ride to finish in 6th place and Chris Symonds, riding his first time trial of more than 10 miles, produced a brilliant ride to finish in 10th place.  Alan Mendelsohn led the other North Roaders home in 1.08.08.  Jim Ewers had a late start due to road works on the A1 (not included in the time below) and Ashley Glass produced a creditable 1.11.20 considering his lack of miles.

I would like to thank all the helpers and marshals.  We made £28 profit on the catering thanks to the efforts of Viv Cameron, Ros Mendelsohn and cakes also supplied by June and Annabel and others.  Sally was a whiz on the computer to produce the results in double quick time.  June made sure nobody wandered off with their numbers and Alan relayed the results. Thanks to Roger for coming out even though his ceiling had fallen in!  Thanks to Jo Mynott, Annabel, Nigel, Bruce and Nick.

Drighlington 25 (Middlemarkers) - Sat 13th August

Knowing I was going to be spending a weekend with my mother in Harrogate I looked for a road race to ride with my brother Chris. With nothing suitable I entered the Drighlington 25 with a view to getting under the hour for the first time. With only a couple of club 25s under my belt, I managed to qualify as one of the 90 slowest entries. Chris chose to be my support and provide carbon tri-spoke wheels, pointy aero helmet and skin suit, so no excuses for not doing a good time.

My start wasn’t until 6.19pm so in the morning Chris drove me out to the course where I could get used to the different feel of the bike, riding with the helmet and get to know the tricky part of the course where it went on a minor road through a village before the turn. On the way up we drove along the A1 where most of the course was, I noticed how busy the traffic was but there were no fast slip-roads joining and the road surface looked marvellous. It rained on and off all morning and until about 3pm but then it brightened up and a fresh breeze rose that would be partly a head wind on the way out.

After excellent preparation, good food and rest at Mum’s and Chris setting up my bike and giving me a massage, I set off. Having more support than the locals shouting me on I couldn’t fail to pass a dozen riders or more. I was pleased to hear at the turn that I was due to go under the hour after the hardest part and then amazed that I was on a “56” on the way back. For the last ten minutes I really had to grit my teeth, bits were hurting that I didn’t know I had and there were no riders in front as carrots, when Chris and nephew Matt said there was a mile to go it was like winning the lottery. I managed to keep it going and finished in first place with a 56:54.

Thanks to my supporters who made me feel like a pro for the weekend and to the race officials, especially the marshals who had drawn the short straws and spent over two and a half hours on an A1 slip road.

North Bucks RC (Millennium Trophy round 9), Botolph Claydon, 20 miles - Sat 23rd July 2005

Richard Somerset fully justified his seeding as a ‘9’ marker by coming in the bottom 10 places in the ninth round of the Millennium Trophy competition staged by the North Bucks Road Club on a rolling course at Botolph Claydon.  On the first lap the heart was willing but the legs were weak. At one point on a particularly testing 1 in 50 drag the small chainring was required and you could hear the groans of agony as far away as Aylesbury.

At the start of the second lap the legs felt better and Richard perceived an increase in his speed. He even managed to stay behind a tractor for a few yards. However he was cruelly disappointed and a touch confused when his time for the second lap was almost exactly the same as the first. A resulting time of 54.06 for the 20 miles was possibly four minutes slower than he could have done in the ‘old days’. He was so annoyed that he even forgo the usual free cup of tea at the HQ and left quickly.

One hopes the effects of the Etape du Tour are still felt in his poor old legs and that participation in the next Millennium Trophy event on the same course on the 29th August will result in a time more in line with his actual abilities. If not then a lifetime of easy rides to Whitwell tea room on a Sunday morning with Jim and Chris may beckon

This  event was the 7th in the season long North London Millennium Trophy series of time trials on sporting Courses (starting with the NRCC Hardriders and finishing on 3 September with the NRCC Memorial Trophy).  Three veteran North Roaders completed the tough course, which includes one lap of the Whitwell road race circuit before proceeding to Hitchin and Great Offley Hill.  Alan Mendelsohn was the fastest club member in 1.13.36, followed by Chris Glithero in 1.15.41 and Alan Harvey in 1.16.25. The event was won by Richard Pettinger in 1.02.04

Shaftesbury CC 25 - Course E2/25 - Sat 25th June

Leigh Taylor was 3rd lady out of 12 in the Shaftesbury 25 held on a course near Newmarket. She caught 5 other ladies in front and finished in a time of 1.01.26.  This is a huge PB for Leigh and she has broken the 14 year old club record of 1:01:57 held by Anne Jones. Congratulations from all the members of the North Road

Report from Leigh

Once again, it wasn't my preferred course, another dual carriage way.  I had an easy ride in the morning as my start time was 6.08pm.  I have to say I was really up for it as it was to be my first open 25.  As usual, Mum, Dad and my mate Pauline came for support.  Just as we started, Newmarket races turned out and the traffic was appalling.  I was a bit worried about this, and in fact half way on the way out I had an 'encounter' with a bunch of boys out of their car window!  I was no 8 and away I went.  I felt really strong, and within the first couple of miles I had caught no 7.  I did worry that I had gone to soon but decided just to keep the pressure on for as long as I had it in me.  Mum and Dad were at every layby, yelling at me to keep going.  I caught another couple of girls and reached the ten mark in 22.02 ( I couldn't believe it!)  The turn around arrived sooner than expected and I could see another couple of girls just coming out of it.  Right, I thought, they were like a red rag.  I had reached the 12.5mile in 27.12minutes.  Could I keep this up?  NO!  As I came out of the turn the wind hit me like a brick wall.  I just kept thinking "keep the pressure on".  For once I was really mentally strong and went after the next girl.  Just before I caught her, I was caught by no 10, who had a PB of 59.  This didn't phase me as I was expecting her alot sooner!  I carried on into the wind and caught up the next two girls.  In fact I managed to catch all in front except nos. 5 and 1.  As you can imagine I was dead chuffed with my time, 1.01.26  Once again my great cheer leaders were a big help,  (not big enough, where was the push?!!).

Women's National 10 mile Championship  - Sun 22nd May

I was very kindly chauffeur driven to Nantwich by my folks.  I was a 'touch' nervous in the car but really looking forward to competing in a time trial with more than a handful of girls!  We arrived on the Saturday afternoon under a cloudy (typical) sky.  My dad drove me around the course to check it out.  As I already knew, it was on a bloody dual carriageway.  Why do people want to ride on them ???  I had 4 roundabouts to negotiate, not a favourite of mine, especially with my bike handling skills!  Anyway, after much debate (I tried unsuccessfully to get dad to ride with me), we pulled up in the layby where the start mark was and unloaded my bike.  The clouds were coming thick and fast but I was adamant that I had to ride the course.  Off I set. Oh dear, traffic thundered past and to top it off there were road works closing off one lane.  And just to make matters worse, at the half way mark, the heavens absolutely opened and I got drenched in sheets of rain.  I could see all of a foot in front of me.  When I arrived back to the car, YES, they were laughing!
After a night in a very dodgy pub with even more dodgy food (lasagne & chips?), and no alcohol passing my lips,  Sunday dawned bright and blue. Briefly.  The usual wheel dilemma ensued.  What if it rained?  What about grip on the corners? Blah, blah, blah.  I borrowed my dads deep section Corimas so at least I felt good...
At the start I checked out my minute girl.  She looked impressive.  I had already decided that my 'real' race would be with the first 40 riders and that if I took time out of number 27 then I would be happy.  Well, thanks to my fab support crew, dad & mum, James,  Pete Ruffhead and David Laws, who was soon off to compete in the men's race I managed to gain time on her and she was insight!  Every time we got to a hill I started to close her down, then as she browed it first she thundered off down the other side and got away again!  As it turned out I took about 25 seconds out of her so feeling like I was going to puke on the finish was worth it! (sure you know that feeling).  I positioned about 8th out of the first 36 girls so I was well pleased.  When we returned to the HQ, my name was on the leaders board.  That didn't last long, but felt good while it lasted.  Next year....In the end, I came 40th out of 88 starters (time was 26.51).  I need to find one MPH to finish in the top 15 so here's hoping.
We stayed and watched the men race. Obree came off at the roundabout where we were based.  Disappointing as he looked fantastic.  What can I say?  I never thought spending a Sunday by a dual carriageway could be so much fun!
