Finsbury Park Road Race 1/2/3/4/W/J - 106Km - Sunday October 2 at Steeple Village Hall, Steeple Essex.

I lined up with a very high quality field on a chilly but sunny morning in deepest Essex. I had checked the riders on the BC rankings and it was clear I was in for a hard time. The first two laps had me hanging on, desperate not to get dropped. As the elastic broke the pace eased a little at times before attacks went again and by half distance a group of 13 had formed with 3 chasers at 1'08 and the bunch at 1'30. The break extended their lead to around 4 minutes by the finish, 4 more riders joined the 3 chasers, now 2 minutes down from the lead.

The much-depleted bunch, riders having gone off the front and out the back, worked hard but made no impression on the leaders.
On the bell lap Mark Daly and Chris Parlet escaped from the break, and built a lead of 52 seconds by the finish line.
The remaining riders crossed in groups of 11, 7 and the bunch.

Herts Wheelers - Almost Last Chance Points Grabber (ERRL) - Sunday 25th September

Despite the rain there was almost a full field for the Herts Wheelers organised "Almost Last Chance Points Grabber". True to form the race attracted riders from far and wide in search of those elusive promotional points at the end of the season.

Also, in the line up was Junior, Adam Norris, resplendent in his National Champion's jersey.

Taking the line for North Road Cycling Club were Frank Rawlings, Roger Bishop and Tony Bradford - and a rather soggy line it was too as a steady drizzle soaked the roads.

The Whitwell circuit was to be completed 7 times, a total of 68miles,  including the St Pauls Walden Hill, (favoured by the light weight rider).

The first couple of laps were uneventful but then a break made up of representatives of many of the participating teams formed.  Tony organised some hard chasing as Frank dropped from the bunch for an early shower.

As the weather brightened and the bunch dwindled the lead group established a solid lead and Roger punctured. In the final lap Tony jumped after a pair of riders who were trying their hand at a break. He joined them and they stayed away, catching new members to their group as they headed towards the finishing line.

In the final gallop for the line Tony took 10th place overall.

Victoria Road Race (ERRL), 3/4/J 18th September - 94km

NRCC riders: Frank Rawlings, Roger Bishop

It was good to see Adam Norris in his National Junior Road Race Champion’s jersey, shame he had decided to enter on the line! After a two mile neutralised section the race started at a brisk pace with any attempts at a breakaway soon closed down. With about fifteen miles covered a group of four riders got a gap and looked like they were working okay together. I jumped across but my shouts of encouragement must have frightened three of them and they sat up. I worked with the remaining rider and another joined us. I led up the hill and over the finish line winning the first prime, or so I thought but as the first lap was not a complete lap I had misjudged the prime laps. The race continued with attacks being brought back with nobody prepared to join the attacker, at one point Adam Norris got a small gap and I joined him but were soon back in the bunch. Frank had been sitting comfortably in the bunch (like a coiled spring) but unfortunately punctured approaching the two laps to go sign. At the bell Norris jumped to claim the prime, got a gap and kept going. Five riders chased him and I thought this looked interesting. I caught the chasing group but when they caught Norris everyone sat up. Although there was about eight miles to go I went for it, in retrospect if I had time to stop and think about it I probably would have sat up too but acted on impulse. I got a good gap, although I didn’t spend any time looking back, and was away until a couple of miles to go. Although I managed to get in the middle of the bunch as they caught me at speed, I couldn’t get forward to have any chance on the narrow lane up the hill to the finish. Adam Norris took a deserved victory leading out up the hill with no one strong enough to pass him and he had spent most of the race driving the bunch.

WOODBANK TROPHY - incorporating the LVRC Championships for the A, B & C Age Categories

Sunday 28th August 2005

Even though it was only a 50 mile race, after looking at the maps the week before I knew it would be hard. Even the neutralised section before the start was a three mile drag with one dip and included a 1 in 7 section.

I set of from Hertford at 05:30 and arrived in Congleton in time to drive round the course. I usually like to ride a circuit before racing but five times round this one was going to be enough. The B category race was had only about 25 starters and we set off in beautiful sunshine, as we had our pre race talk I noticed there weren’t many other six foot riders and most were the under 10 stone variety. Although feeling comfortable approaching the start I thought I should have gone for a smaller lowest gear, I was on a 39 x 23. The first climb was less than a mile into the race, I was in the bunch but two riders had already gone off the front. The next section had two long descents with one short sharp climb in between, another steep hill arrow on the map, but momentum helped me up most of this one. The next two and a half miles were fairly flat and that was followed by a descent including a tricky bit where the road twisted through a wood yard. Then the serious hills started. The first was the longest at about one and a half miles, I enjoy climbing but the long sections of 1 in 7 really sapped my strength. There was a respite for about 300 yards then a steep 500 yards. I felt fine and enjoyed the flat half mile and fast descent before the last climb up to the finish. This was another mostly 1 in 7 but thankfully only about 500 yards.

On the second time up the steeper bits I started going backwards through the bunch and was adrift as I finished lap two. Ahead of me I could see the bunch was fragmented and I managed to catch some other riders and four of us worked well together. Again on the steep section I was dropped and two riders put some time into me and caught the bunch. I pulled back time on the descents and flatter bits but not enough before losing more time on the climbs. I was set to climb off at the bell but encouraged to continue, after the next hill I did climb off ready to go back and see the finish but a minute later the fourth member of our ex-chasing group gave me a shout to join him and we did the last lap together.

I ended up in 15th position, 4 minutes down and I take my hat off to all who finished.

LVRC Eastway - Sun 10th July

Chris Glithero rode the well supported Ciclos Uno LVRC event at Eastway.  With 50 yards to go he was  in the top 10 but finished 19th.  What is the solution to this problem? New bike? New legs?  Only ride events with downhill finishes?  Lose weight?  Who knows.

Shaftesbury CC (ERRL) - Sat 9th July 3/4/W/J - 32 laps of Eastway

John Turton, Trevor Burke, and Roger Bishop rode the Shaftesbury CC road race on Sunday. It was supposed to be a supporting race for the 2-day event, which Roger was looking forward to, but unfortunately that was cancelled due to lack of police support.

The race started quite gently but picked up with a constant series of attacks that came to nothing. Richard Webster of Team Welwyn had a go with three laps to go, as the bunch were on him climbing up to the finish line with two laps to go, Roger jumped and got a good gap. He nearly managed to hold of the pack for the two laps but was caught with about 400m to go.

LVRC at Eastway Sunday 26th June

Chris Glithero was the sole NRCC representative  out of nearly 60 starters. The event was won by Martin Hulbert of VC Meudon, who broke away with another rider with 3 laps to go.  Chris was 24th overall in a huge and hairy bunch sprint.

Eagle Road Race (ERRL) - Sunday 19th June - Ugley - 100km 3/4/J

Alan Lovegrove, John Turton, Trevor Burke, Jonathan Appleby and myself were at the starting line for the Eagle Road Club Summer Road Race on Sunday. By 9am the temperature was already climbing up through the twenties and everyone was taking on as much liquid as possible.

The race set off from the headquarters at the Eagle Hut at Ugley. It was neutralised until crossing the bridge over the M11 and then proceeded to Newport where left to Clavering, left to Rickling, Rickling Green and Quendon where it headed for Newport again. The course is probably familiar to most North Roaders from weekend rides with the Road out of Newport being a bit lumpy with some long drags, the long climb up to the finish just before Rickling and the road out of Clavering into the wind being the toughest bits.

The first two and a half laps were full of attacks but nothing amounted to much. I was just saying this to Trevor when somehow there was a group of six riders up the road with three in a chasing group. With Jonathan in the chasing group we were just watching the bunch but there was little activity. In Clavering with two and a half laps to go we were disappointed to see Jonathan by the side of the road; he looked okay so hopefully it was just a puncture. At about the same time we were told the front group had about a minute and a half on the bunch. I attacked and was joined by Mark Howard (Shaftesbury CC). He is a good tester so I thought this should be a good move but although we maintained the gap I dropped him on the climb to the finish line; the Shaftesbury had been working hard on the front of the bunch so I think that had taken its toll. I kept going and although I was joined by another rider on two occasions, they bridged the gap but couldn’t (or didn’t want to) keep it going. I was eventually caught by Neil Chapman (Maldon & Dist) and this time we worked together and put some distance between us and the bunch. Meanwhile back on the front of the bunch, in spite of the big fellas suffering in the heat (now 32 degrees) John and Trevor were covering any counter attacks. We picked up the two chasers, Craig Beech (Interbike RT) managing to stay with us and caught the lead group of six with three quarters of a lap to go. We injected a bit more pace to the group and worked well. I started to suffer the last time along the Newport to Clavering road and hung on to the back. I must have looked as bad as I felt – nobody moaned at me, or was it because I was the oldest in the group and it was Father’s Day ? Two riders jumped after Clavering, I wanted to go but didn’t want to blow and end up trying to crawl in before the bunch. The others didn’t / couldn’t chase either and the two soon had a good gap. I started to feel stronger on the run in and got the others working a bit but it was too late. With the big oak tree at the finish in the distance on the top of the climb I managed to muster enough strength to come third in the chasers, finishing fifth.

Another six points in the ERRL puts The North Road in 6th place and me in sixth in the rider standings.

LVRC National Criterium Championships, Eastway - Sunday 5th June

The League of Veteran Racing Cyclists held there National Criterium Championships on Sunday at Eastway.  Roger Bishop, John Turton and Tony Bradford represented the North Road CC at this event completing the 35 mile course in a little over 1 hour and 35 minutes.  On a windy afternoon the racing was hot from the word go. It didn't take long for a small break to form and with David Baker (Cyclos Uno) away with two others there was little chance of pulling the three back.

After about 20 laps the North Road team began putting in attacks to try and break away from the main bunch. These came to little as the group were all fired up for the Nationals and nothing was going to get away.

In the end the finale was a bunch sprint with all three North Road riders rubbing shoulders in the gallop.  Tony gained 14th place for the age group he raced in and Roger 15th with John close behind in 16th.  David Baker won the Championship.

Tasvale Road Race (ERRL) – East Anglian Cycling Club- Sunday 29th May - 2/3/4/W/J - 80km

Peter Walters and I represented the North Road in a field of 50 riders at the Tasvale Road Race on the Shotesham course just south of Norwich. Stating at 2pm meant we could get to Norfolk without setting off in the early hours. It was 10 laps of a 5 mile circuit with a sharp climb up Skeets Hill to the finish and two other less severe but significant climbs when doing them 10 times.

With plenty of places to put the pressure on the bunch was busy chasing breaks from the start. I knew the numbers of some of the favourites and tried to get away with them a couple of times in the first few laps but was soon closed down. After three laps there were two riders ahead being chased by a group of seven who had about 15 seconds on the bunch. Mark Waller (Southend) and I jumped from the bunch and managed to bridge the gap. We rode through and soon had a good working group catching the two leaders.

Fortunately there were three Cambridge riders in the break so the rest of their team were not helping the bunch to chase. The penultimate time over the finish line was one of three primes and the sprint split the group. I managed to join the leaders and a group of 8 reformed. Fortunately for the chasers a tractor held us up and we all were together again. One rider attacked with a couple of miles to go but the group continued to work together and pulled him back. Mark Waller attacked with 500m to go, I went with him but we were passed by four riders in the sprint up Skeets Hill, including Adrian Ramsbottom the winner.

Whitewebbs Spring Road Race (ERRL) - Sunday, 22nd of May, 2005 - Whitwell, Herts 2/3/4/W; 110Km

A bright morning greeted the eighty riders at the start line and it stayed dry in spite of the chance of showers. The wind was fresh but Southerly was probably the kindest direction being against on the descent from St Pauls Warden to Whitwell, sheltered on the road to Codicote and with on the Hitchin Road.

The North Road was represented by six riders, Trevor Burke, John Turton, Jonathan Appleby, Peter Walters, Frank Rawlings and myself.

I expected the race to split due to the hills, including the two kilometre drag up to St Paul's Warden and the two short sharp climbs before the finish on the way to Codicote, but there was still a bunch of thirty to forty riders as the race took the left turn to leave Whitwell for the seventh and last time. I planned to attack on the first of the two final climbs but there was a lull in the bunch with a mile to go and I jumped. I gained a couple of hundred metres but was swallowed up by the bunch before the top of the first climb. Adam Norris led the bunch in with no one strong enough to pass him in the sprint. Frank and Jonathan finished in the bunch, Frank about twentieth and Jonathan unsure of position but hoping for the prize for the first fourth cat home. The others had climbed off, the pace up the hills taking its toll.

Edgware RC Road Race - 3/4/W; 100Km Cheddington, Bucks - Sun 15th May

Jonathan Appleby, Trevor Burke, John Turton and myself all lined up at the start on a glorious sunny morning in a full field of seventy riders. After a short neutralised ride, the race began as it was to continue at a fair pace averaging 25 mph for the 60 miles. It was five and a half laps of the 10.8 mile circuit which was fairly flat with one not too long climb up to Mentmore.

If the pace did drop at all the field was soon spread across the road, it was at one of these occasions as the bunch was passing two large tractors, that I got stuck behind a faller. I was soon well off the back and had to ride hard for about six miles before getting back on. Shortly after this the race was stopped and we were cautioned about crossing the white line, one rider was pulled out later. Although it helped me recover it also gave the boys on the front a rest and the pace was hot as many attacked. With a combination of wanting to rest and moving up through the field being difficult, I sat in near the back for the next couple of laps. Meanwhile the other three North Roaders were in the bunch, John near the front and the others trying to stay upright as wheels touched. With two laps to go I felt like I had eaten a tin of spinach and moved up through and around the bunch. When I got near the front on a long straight section, I could see a break of about eight riders with a minute or so on the bunch. Full of enthusiasm, as I had just joined the race, I encouraged an organised chase which worked very well. The number of workers grew to about fifteen, including the NRCC lads, not doing too much I hope, and the break was pulled back with about four miles to go. I planned to jump just before the one kilometre to go sign but just before then the brakes went on and it was solid riders across the road. With about five hundred metres to go a van came the other way and split the bunch. I had about twenty riders in front of me and although I passed some the line came too soon with me in about sixteenth position. Trevor, John and Jonathan finished close behind in the fragmented bunch.

Andrews Trophy (ERRL) East Hanningfield, 70 miles - Sun 15th May

George Olive, Frank Rawlings and Tony Bradford rode in the Andrews Trophy Road Race for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Cat riders on Sunday - one of the Eastern Road Race League events.
On a new, less hilly course of a little over 5 miles the riders completed 13 laps to make a total of 70 miles.
From the moment the race began the pace was averaging 25 mph in hot pursuit of the inevitable early break.
With 50 miles finished and several attempts off the front by Frank and Tony the bunch brought the break-away back into the fold and everyone began to re evaluate the situation.  With only a small hill on the course no one appeared too concerned with trying a big effort off the front and for a lap there was chaos as one after another rider shot up the road, only to be reeled back in.
Eventually a group of 9 went away. Still the speed stayed high and but for a crash in the back of the pack, which held George up forcing him to chase very hard to rejoin, everything was looking set for a sprint for the remaining bunch.
With a little under two laps remaining Tony bolted for freedom with another rider.  Soon this duo were joined by two more and the four gained about 30 seconds on the chasers.  On the final time up the climb Tony and a n other jumped clear and as the other two were swallowed up, crossed the line with Tony taking 11th place.

Ciclos Uno Summer Series - Eastway - Sunday 1st May

Sunday 1st May.  Tony Bradford, Roger Bishop and Chris Glithero of North Road Cycling Club joined forces to race at Eastway in the Cyclos Uno summer series.  This Criterium or short circuit race, took place over a tight circuit of 1 mile covered some 35 times.  Within 2 minutes of the start a small break away of 6 started working together.  The North Road team took it in turns to join small chasing groups in an attempt to reach the lead group but to no avail - the bunch were not prepared to let more get away.

With 15 minutes to go Tony put in a huge effort to bridge the gap and got within 15 seconds but could not close further. Roger then tried the same but with the same result. Both efforts left the bunch split around the course and with things in disarray behind Tony tried again, this time with Chris watching for chasers.  With some help from another rider Tony joined the lead group as they started the last lap and managed 6 place in the final rush for the line. Roger Bishop and Chris finished close behind in the depleted bunch.

Team Milton Keynes Spring Road Races: 24/4/05

Held on Sunday, April 24 at Winslow, Bucks

3/4/W/J - 70Km

John Turton, Trevor Burke and Roger Bishop joined a field of 70 riders in the MK RR on a bright but breezy morning. John and Roger were busy attacking, getting onto breaks or blocking on the front for the first lap and a half of the four and a half lap race. With the breeze across open countryside limiting the time any breaks gained they decided to “keep their powder dry” and sit in the bunch with Trevor.

With about five miles to go Roger went off the front to join a break of four riders, unfortunately rather than injecting some more pace into the break he dropped the other riders and was soon on his own. With about 5k to go, he was joined by David McGaw and after a couple of turns each, McGaw attacked and dropped Roger.

With the line in site and gradually pulling back McGaw the bunch came through with John and Trevor unable to get to the front at the right time.

McGaw managed to hang on to grab a small winning margin.

Ike Saul Road Race (ERRL) - 24th April

The Ike Saul memorial road race was held on Sunday, in glorious weather in south Cambridgeshire.

This 65 mile race for 1,2 and 3 Cat riders covers a rolling circuit 5 times. The North Road Cycling Club were represented by Tony Bradford and Frank Rawlings.

The race pace was kept high throughout by the Glenedene team who were well represented but missed the opportunity to place any riders in the main move of the day. Despite their efforts 4 brave souls kept ahead for almost the entire race leaving the bunch to fight over the minor placings.

Tony was well positioned in the front of the group as the race entered the final stages, over narrow lanes.  As the speed built up for the sprint he jumped but cramp in both legs forced him to ease up.  Frank was a couple of rows back and despite weaving his way through the pack he was outside the prize money, in 15th position.

(Cambridge CC gained 1,3  and 4th positions getting points in the ERR League whilst the Glenedene superstars were away in Europe.)

Probably leave out the stuff in brackets from any newspaper article but OK for the web site

2/3 - 40 miles

It was short and fast race with a predictable rhythm. It went hard up the climb from Harlow to the M11 bridge and I was close to the limit on every lap. On the flat section back to Matching Green the pace was constant. The climb back up to Hatfield Heath was another point of pain but never a real killer.
Roger was looking strong at the end of laps 2 and 3 as he drifted off the front and Trevor and I did our best to get on the pointed end and slow
things down for him.
Danny Smith made a nice move with 2 miles to go as he got 50 metres on the bunch with 2 other riders, but the blew on the final climb.
I tried to maintain a position in the top 20 for the last lap with a vain hope of getting a placing if it came to a sprint. I was fairly happy with
coming 14th but I know that the result looks better than my actual fitness level compared to the rest of the field.

John Turton and Trevor Burke rode the Maldon Road Race with Roger Bishop (me) failing to get an entry on the line.

After a cold, wet and windy week the riders were blessed with bright sunshine and although the breeze was fresh it had lost its cutting edge. In fact as a spectator there were moments when the weather was positively balmy.

After rubbing our two valiant NRCC riders down with a copy of The Sporting Life I wished them well and watched them pedal off and like any club mate naturally would worried that they would be all right.

I pedalled off in the opposite direction just to confuse the marshals and other officials. After approximately 18mins and 42secs I noticed a car heading towards me with its headlights on and a flashing yellow light on the roof. After first thinking the council were gritting again I realised the race was indeed, as the sign said, approaching and found a safe spot to view the spectacle. A group of five riders already had a lead of 34 seconds. Although they appeared to be working well together I wondered whether on such a breezy day it was a little early to “go for one”.

After a cheery wave to our two splendid riders in the bunch and passing on the information about the break I continued on my way.

Two thirds of my way around the course or one third if you went in the right direction was a turning that cut across to the start. After four laps the race was going to turn left along this road from the starting line and finish at the top of a sharp climb. I rode backwards and forwards along this road so I saw them twice each lap. Going forwards was okay but I fell off twenty seven times trying to go backwards,. This also gave me the opportunity to sprint up the hill several times between each lap getting the frustration of not racing out of my system. I waited at this junction and when the race came past, now after a third of lap 2, the break was still at the half-minute mark. The NRCC boys looked comfortable in the pack; John about twelve riders back, the perfect position to be aware of what is happening but not to do too much work. Trevor was enjoying his first race on the road and keeping the rest of the bunch amused with his stories of how in the old days he had to nail the studs into his football boots.

After some more sprints I saw them next at the end of the second lap. By this time my ability to compute lap times, gaps, day of the week etc was diminishing but the break still had about half a minute.

After the next third of a lap the lead had dropped dramatically and they were about to be caught by the bunch. As they passed me another group was just going off the front. One of these riders was none other than Digby Symons the current leader of the ERRL and arch-enemy of The Glendene! I tried to alert my club mates to the danger but as the expression goes it is very easy to offer advice from a cosy grass verge in front of a hawthorn bush but it is not always easy to hear it or do anything about it.

At the bell as expected because they always ring it with one lap to go there was now a group of 10 riders with a minute on the bunch. In spite of my encouragement to chase I knew the bunch would just be sprinting for the minor places at the finish.

At three and a third laps gone the break still had a minute and there was a small group of three or four riders trying to catch the break.

The next time I was to see the race was at the finish. I only had chance for one more sprint up the hill before the crowds gathered to cheer on these fine athletes. Before they came into sight but I have this on good authority with about four miles to go Trevor launched himself off the front and gained a good gap. He held on until a mile to go before being caught by the bunch.

At the finish Mark Waller (Southend Wheelers) had left the front group for a lone win. It was a splendid ride as he had been one of the original five in the break.

In the final sprint John and Trevor finished near the front of the bunch, John after being boxed in and Trevor after having a mechanical. Trevor appeared to be having problems with his big chainring; he must have distorted it when he attacked with 4 miles to go!

Essex Roads Spring Road Race (ERRL), 70km, 3/4/J - Sunday 3rd April

Conditions were bright for the start with a freshening wind and turning cloudy for the finish of this 70km Eastern Road Race League Event over 4.5 laps of the Bicknacre/Woodham Ferrers circuit. The race stayed together early on with a few attacks which only gained seconds over the 49 rider bunch. At about the half way stage, Dave Wright (Finsbury Park CC) put in an attack, which Roger Bishop (North Road CC) followed. Wright sat up and at the same time Neil Chapman (Maldon & District CC) joined Bishop, Wright then jumped again to join the break. At the start of the 3rd time up the climb to Edwin’s Hall, Wright was dropped and absorbed by the bunch. A couple of hundred metres after the top, with two laps to go, the two leaders were caught by Douglas Bradshaw (Cambridge CC). The three worked together until after a further 4km, on the drag after Cold Norton, Chapman was dropped. Bishop worked with Bradshaw until on the penultimate climb of Edwins Hall Lane, Bradshaw dropped his breakaway companion and at the finish line with 1 lap of the 16km circuit remaining he held a 2 minute lead over the bunch which he increased on the final lap to finish 2mins 35sec ahead of Bishop. Bishop managed to maintain the gap of about a minute between himself and the bunch for most of the final lap, coming in 31 secs ahead of the field as they increased the pace at the finish. Adrian Ramsbottom, Glendene CC, took the sprint for 3rd place as he lead in the bunch over 3mins behind the winner

Archer International Road Race Elite/1/2/3 cat, Bucks - Sunday 3rd April

Tony Bradford rode in the Archer International supporting race for Elite and 1, 2 and 3 Cat riders on Sunday the 3rd of April.

The route includes the infamous Gore Hill which riders climb 6 times whilst racing the total 50 miles.  The pace was fast from start to finish on a warm spring day, with very little wind to cause the riders any difficulty.  Everyone was eager to try to escape the bunch and an early break away group managed to stay away to the end despite a number of smaller groups splintering from the main pack in hot pursuit.

In the end Tony sprinted it out with the 20 or so riders who survived to tussle out the minor placings in a race that was completed at an average of 25 mph.

Spring Chicken Road Race 3/4/J, 64 km. Charndon, Bucks, Sat 12th March

Eighty riders kicked off their ’05 road campaigns in the Hemel Hempstead CC’s Spring Chicken RR, held over 64km on the rolling Claydons circuit in Buckinghamshire. John Turton was the North Road’s sole entrant. Despite strong winds and the presence of some talented junior riders, eager to test their form, the bunch reeled in all early breakaway attempts. Nervous horses stalled the bunch several times during the race, at various points around the circuit. John finally managed to get away with 11 other riders inside the last 10 miles and everyone worked well to consolidate the break. As the group started jockeying for position and slowing down started inside the last mile, he elected to ride on the front with Adam Norris (Crest CC), in order to keep the pace high and prevent any last minute surprises by the pursuing bunch. Ten riders contested the final sprint and John’s earlier efforts told as he could only manage 8th place.

Crest RR, Ugley, 2/3/4 110km, Sunday 6th March

Frank Rawlins took part in the Crest RR. The race was delayed by 30 mins so the ice could melt but it was still freezing at the start. Dan Staite from the Cambridge CC got away on the first climb and stayed away to win by four minutes. Seven chasers broke up and there were three left by the end. The rest of the field were then riding for fifth place. Frank blew up on the last climb and grovelled in 50 metres off the back of the main group and came 20th. Frank was happy to have got round his first race of the season but disappointed that he blew when the rush for the line started, however he was pleased that he coped better than the previous year when he only lasted four laps.

San Fairy Ann Crits No.3 Eastway - Sat 6th March

Trevor Burke and John Turton lined up with over 40 other riders at Eastway last Saturday morning, for the third round of the San Fairy Ann CC’s Spring crits. Having ridden the 20 lap 4th category only events, at the two previous meetings, Trevor decided to take the plunge and step up to the 32 lap 3/J event to keep John company. After a good warm up on the circuit, the organisers then let the bunch sit on the start line in a biting wind for 15 minutes to cool down – how thoughtful! Luckily both Trevor and John are blessed with a generous layer of natural insulation and could only look on sympathetically at the others blue noses and chattering teeth. Once the race got underway it quickly became apparent that in the freezing conditions and strong winds, no-one was overly keen to do a “Jackie Durand” and go for a “long one”. With 22 laps already covered and after several tentative attempts by small groups and individuals to get a late gap, two riders from Team Economic Energy (Nick George and Robert Moorman), and a Kingston Phoenix rider finally gained some daylight and worked hard to capitalise on it. The Economic Energy boys succeeded in dropping the Kingston rider with a handful of laps remaining and crossed the line hand-in-hand for joint first place. Greg Simcock of the Elmy/XRT CC took a flyer with a couple of laps to go, while the sprinters were all keeping an eye on each other and managed to scamper off on his own for a crafty 3rd place. The rest of the bunch stayed together until mid-way through the back of the circuit when, predictably enough, the charge started. John managed to jump away from the bunch on the short rise out of the valley, taking only Costa Perides (Team Sport and Publicity), with him and just grabbed 4th place, holding Costa off in the lunge for the line. Revelation of the race was Trevor Burke, who in his first ever 3rd category event, suffered throughout at the increased pace, but still managed to pull a sprint out of the bag over the last 300m, to squirrel past many experienced riders for 12th place. Well done Trevor!

Eastway “training ride” Sunday 13th Feb 05

John Turton and Roger Bishop rode at Eastway on Sunday to prepare for their first BC race of the season the following Saturday. It was an hour and five laps in a very strong wind but thankfully dry. The event was open to all comers and without the novices’ event, that normally precedes this ride, there was a mixed level of rider.

After 5 laps the race had sorted itself out with a bunch of about 20 and small groups of novice riders enjoying the experience of riding Eastway (?) Any attempts at escaping from the bunch were short lived as it was hard work into the wind but after Roger had chased a break he found himself off the front with another rider who was prepared to have a go. They stayed away for about 5 laps and it was about 40 minutes into the race when they were caught. John was riding comfortably in the first half a dozen riders and sheltered Roger while he recovered. There were no significant breaks until just before the hour was up when Roger attacked, on his own this time. He stayed away for 2 laps and was caught by a reduced pack. John was torn between sitting in ready for the sprint if Roger was caught, and taking an early shower as he was nursing an injury. He took the wise option and was first in the tea queue. Roger managed to stay with the bunch and came in about eighth. It was good practice for Eastway and hopefully they will benefit next Saturday although Roger is riding the 4th cat race and John is with the 3rds.

Hillingdon winter Series 2004/05 :

(report taken from the londoncyclesport website)

The 12th race of the Twickenham CC Hillingdon winter series held on Sunday, January 29 - series info

The race started in the rain & things looked grim, but nonetheless another large field lined up & they were rewarded with the not a further drop falling. Funnily there were more punctures pre-race than in it.

The first to show were Matt Seaton (VC Londres) & Keith Knight (Addiscombe CC) and they had a few laps dangling at the front until pulled back into the throng after a lot of work by Michael Metayer (Sport & Publicity), Martin Docker (PCA/Ciclos Uno) to mention just two, to bring them back.

Once more Seaton went away, this time he was joined by Docker & David Jack (Twickenham CC), but a hard chasing Matt Talbot (Glendene CC) & Henry Furniss (Ride Beyond) drew the pack back to them.

George Olive (North Rd CC) had a few moments in the lead before the final selection was made, when a lead group jumped away and built a 40 plus second lead back to the pack.

From this lead group; Lewis Atkins (Glendene CC), Talbot, Furniss, Dan Rudd (Edwardes), Docker, Dave Griffiths (Twickenham), Seaton & Martin Hulbert (VC Muedon), edged away from Mick McManus (Twickenham CC) & Steve Legg (Twickenham CC).

Atkins, Talbot & Furniss then made a huge effort to put daylight between themselves & the break. At the line Atkins out sprinted his team mate Talbot & Furniss (who we overheard afterward asking advice on sprinting technique).

Both Hulbert & Rudd had made efforts to bridge the gap, but with no success & Rudd was able to claim 4th a few centimetres ahead of Docker.

McManus led in Legg at 16 seconds & Jamie Streather (VC St Raphael) headed the pack.
