TRACK LEAGUE - Monday 6th Sep 2004
George
does the Treble
I
took part in the penultimate round of the Reading track league. My lack
of track racing since the Welwyn track league had finished didn’t seem
to show at all as I had a very successful evening notching up 3 wins.
I
won the first event the 10-lap scratch, having to chase down a break
with 2 laps to go and out sprinting the other riders at the finish.
The
next event was the Kerin. I knew which riders to watch so stayed near
them. When they opened up for the sprint at the 200 metre mark I stuck
to their wheels and blasted past in the home straight to win
comfortably.
The
next event was the devil. As I was feeling good I didn’t use my usual
tactic of being last man and taking one out every time but tried to mix
it in the bunch squeezing my way through. This didn’t work and I was
eliminated early.
The
next event was the unknown distance. The bell could go anytime so I
stayed near the riders who did well in the first race. They were all at
the front so if the bell went I had no chance, Then the whole field
swung up the track and someone attacked so I went with him and the bell
went. I was positioned perfectly in second place. I waited until about
150m to go and then kicked for home and won by 2 or 3 lengths.
A
short break and the final event, the 20km (43 lap) scratch was to begin.
The race started quickly and within 10laps most of the riders had
dropped out and I think only about 7 or 8 remained so for over 30 laps I
was having to work hard doing my half lap turns. The pace was very up
and down with some riders sprinting as they hit the front in order to
shrink the group; this worked as at 20 laps to go only 6 remained.
I was a marked man as they’d seen my earlier wins but also saw
that I was beginning to struggle and with 6 to go as I pulled off the
front someone attacked. I slotted into 6th place and some
daylight appeared between the 3rd and 4th rider.
This split was decisive as I was left to chase hard and could not close
the gap and could only watch as the first three places were fought out.
I won the sprint for 4th place.

EASTERN
DIVISION GRASSTRACK CHAMPS - SELE SCHOOL, HERTFORD, Sun 1st August
From Tony
Bradford
Sunday afternoon - 30C on the thermometer. What I
should have been doing was sitting in the garden with an ice cold
drink. instead I found myself participating in the Eastern
Region Grass Track Championships. There was a full programme of
events for seniors, juniors, women and teams. Unfortunately, I
was the only NRCC rider to have entered so the latter were out for me.
This gave me more time to focus on the individual events. The
track was a near flat 400m oval on Sele School grounds. the
racing was fast and I found the 10 lap scratch race hard, managing to
take 6th place. I am renowned for my lack of expertise in the
Devil on the hard track. On Sunday with five still in the pack I
took flight and managed to stay away for the win with Peter Bissell
closing in very fast. The Regional Grass Track Pursuit followed
a short break. Spurred on by the Devil win and good family
support I took an aggressive approach to this and won it with 6
seconds to spare on the second placed rider. The sprints are not
really my thing although I managed a 5th place in the 800m senior
event. This left the 8km, 20 lap finale. The weather as
much as the pace took its toll in this event. Peter Bissell flew
off the front with 11 laps still to go. I had to remind myself
that he is a Junior and thus didn't count in my event. Away with
John McClelland and Peter Wheelar I knew my sprint was no match.
To avoid 3rd place I put a couple of hard turns in on the front and
blew Peter of our wheel. Unfortunately, John's legs were
stronger and he led us across the line. This well and truly
earned me my 2nd Category Licence and was a great family afternoon
out. That garden and cold drink look even more appealing.
WELWYN
TRACK LEAGUE - FRIDAY 16th JULY
Report by Nigel Cameron
At the last Welwyn track league on Friday 16th July
things looked good in the opening 10 lap having been dragged up to the
front & sat on the leader's (Andy Brown) wheel for the
previous 2 laps. I came past in the lead with half a lap to go only to
find all the sprinters sailed past me on the home straight. Faired
better in the devil where I was down to the last
half dozen only to mistake an annoyed sounding & oft repeated
"you are out" "100" and "44" on the feint
and distorted tannoy for my "134". I pulled up the banking
only to see the real culprits 100 and 44 pull out. Too far back to
contest the sprint I was encouraged by the commentator to get 4th just
by completing the lap and crossing the line with a flat rear tub.
Managing somehow to puncture on the fateful last lap and therefore
missed the chance to suffer in the ten mile. Still cant complain as it
was my only league point of the whole, short league season (worth 2
pounds) & just as I was getting a hint of fitness ("Not"
as the youngsters add for the negative these days).
