NORTH ROAD ERRL ROAD RACE- DEBDEN, ESSEX, 80km 3/4/J - SUNDAY 6th JUNE

In the Summer Road Race – a round in the Essex Road Race League, Frank Rawlins, Philip Moon and Jonathan Appleby (riding his first road race) were the representatives for the North Road. A full field took part on a fine day for racing over five laps of the Debden circuit, which took in Debden Cross, Cutlers Green, Thaxted and Howlett End.

Phil started a break with Vincent Davison (Victoria CC) and took a 30 second lead but was swallowed up by the chasing bunch after three-quarters of a lap. The race then slowed down. There was another short break of three riders. Three laps to go a serious break of four, developed with Phil once again involved with Edward Whitehorn (Glendene CC), Adam Norris (Crest CC) and Mark Agnew (Norfolk Drywall Cycles RT). Unfortunately Phil was dropped and left the three riders on their own, to take a 65 second lead. On the fourth time up Ivy Todd Hill, junior rider Whitehorn was far too strong for the other two riders and took the last two primes, finishing two minutes and five seconds over Norris and Agnew respectively. The three North Roaders finished in the top half of the bunch. The first prime was taken by another Glendene CC rider, Mark Porter.
