Chiltern Trophy LVRC 100km Road Race Sunday 20th June

Report from Roger Bishop

An LVRC road race for A and B category riders (40-44 and 45-49) the circuit was described as undulating with some long drags and one nasty hill, four laps with the finish at the top of the main climb. I joined 4 others in a
hardworking break on the first 20 mile lap which included the eventual winner Nick Yarwood, but the chase was well organised and we were caught at the bottom of the main climb. The counter attacks started straight away and a break of 6 formed before the summit, I hesitated feeling I didn't have the legs to go again, big mistake, should have tried, as that was the winning break. Once I had recovered I tried to bridge the gap several times but those left in the bunch seemed tired by their earlier efforts and were unable to sustain the chase, which was disorganised, and in spite of forming
several chasing groups I didn't get much help. Meanwhile the break of 6 were working well into the wind which made the circuit even harder. The penultimate time up the big climb my attack took me clear of the bunch and although a chasing group of 5 formed behind me, who could see me up the road on some exposed parts of the course, I finished between that chasing group and the leaders who contested the sprint ahead of me while the chasers were 1 1/2 minutes behind. I finished 7th overall (and 5th in my age category B)

Very pleased with my performance and learning fast.
