TRICYCLES NATIONAL CIRCUIT CHAMPIONSHIP - BUNGAY SUFFOLK - 3rd MAY

The day, was pretty horrible, with the rain varying between persistent and torrential. This did have an up side however as the circuit was washed clean of oil and was not so slippery as you might have expected. The Eastern Daily Press reported that the event promised "thrills and spills" - and the tricycles did their best to oblige. CC Breckland rider Martin Badham joined Welwyn Wheeler Gawain Akers in a holly hedge outside Bungay library, while Geoff Booker's first act as new national tricycle criterium champion was to crash, unable to slow down enough after a sprint with last year's winner Sid Charlton, to negotiate the first corner. Thankfully no one was significantly hurt - perhaps because of the mattresses strategically placed around lamp posts and house by the corners. I was pleased to finish this year after last years DNF when my handle bar expander bolt worked loose on the bumpy corners, and I could no longer steer the trike.

Geoff Brooker and Sid Charlton got away in the first few laps and I unknowingly (because of the rain) led a chasing group of four or five riders for most of the race. Roger Akers and Steve Avery sprinted past me, with less than half a lap to go to take third and fourth, and I managed to hold the others of and finish fifth....live and learn, I guess. Shame the Hertford crits have not been resurrected.
