In the absence of Hayden Grove, last year's winner, the North Road 2003 Track champion Neil Lewis took full advantage and came past the timekeeper in 2.55. With the finishing line extended to the top of the road, he took 12 seconds out of second place, Roger Bishop in a time of 3.07. With the 2003 season coming to the end, the club’s penultimate event was the Club Hardriders, which was two circuits of the Brickendon Green course. On a sunny and windy autumn day there was a repeat performance for last year's winner roadman Tony Bradford. He came past the timekeeper in 49:15, two minutes and fifty one seconds faster then second placed Alan Harvey. Roger Bishop, just out of hospital, performed well; after the first lap he was in second place, but he faded to finish in fourth with a time of 52:46, only five seconds behind third place Bruce Metheringham.

MEMORIAL TROPHY - SUNDAY SEP 21

The Memorial Trophy Events, took place on a new rolling 25 kilometre course. The course started north of Buntingford, headed towards the north Puckeridge roundabout, took in Braughing, Hay Street, Hare Street, and the long climb to Buckland and then back on to the A10, finishing at Chipping.

EVENT 1

Riders in the main event, the 50 kilometre 2 lap event (Rudy Project District Series) for Men and under-23s competed for the Memorial Trophy. This is a perpetual cup in memory of those club members who fell in the two world wars. The event was cancelled last year, as North Road did not want to promote the event on the dangerous F1.

First man of 18 riders was North Roader Tony Bradford, who was joined by Alan Harvey, Brian Robertson and Bruce Metheringham – riding his first open event of the season. Brian was the first North Roader, coming past the time keeper in 1:19:27. Tony managed tenth position. The winner was Barry Charles (Stourbridge CC), picking up the Memorial Trophy and a cheque for £110, beating second place James Millard (API Bikes.com) by 54 seconds. Millard also took the first under 23 (Espoir) prize.

North Road times:

Brian Robertson                      1:19:27 (6)

Tony Bradford                        1:24:58 (10)

Alan Harvey                            1:30:22 (15)

Bruce Metheringham               1:34:27 (18).

EVENT 2

In Event 2, for Veterans, Women and Juniors, 21 riders competed over one lap of the course (25km), The host club was represented by Tim Jenkins, Paul Groves and Mike Harvey, all three riding their first open event of the season. The fastest veteran was David Creese (Team Sanjan Design), finishing in 37:55, also picking up the second fastest Veteran on target (+5.26). He was followed by John McMillan (Kenton RC), a former winner of the North Road Hardriders, past the finishing line in 39:14, and winning the first Veteran on target (+6.44) award. In the Women's competition Leda Cox (Cambridge Textra) was the winner in 42:20 and seventh overall. Joint second were Nicky Peters (Steve Goffs RT) and Laura Bissell (Team Welwyn) with a time of 43:11. The fastest junior went to Emma Trott (Welwyn Wheelers). The prizes were presented by Graham Thompson.

The event was very successful, and the riders were asked what they thought of the new rolling course. The response was good.

North Road times:

Mike Harvey            47:50 (15)

Tim Jenkins             49:09 (16)

Paul Groves            50:17 (19).

Roger Bishop was down to ride; however, a late notice hospital appointment from the hospital meant no race. Wishing you a quick recovery Roger, hope to see you on your bike soon.

Many thanks must go to Chris Glithero, for organising a successful event, Adrian Kennet for pushing off, Mary Cook for the refreshments, Sally Ewers for results, June Lacey, on the desk and placing the times on the board, and all the marshals around the circuit.

WELWYN WHEELERS HILLY 50KM TIME TRIAL - FRIDAY 18th APRIL 2003

On Good Friday eight members of the North Road Cycling Club competed in the Welwyn Hilly 50 kilometre Time Trial organized by Welwyn Wheelers Cycling Club, this went towards the London North DC Millennium Competition.

Starting from the Great North Road, taking in Codicote, St Ippolyts with the steep Offley Hill, through Whitwell up Horns Hill with the long Ballsclough Hill at Kimpton and finishing in a new finish on the Ayot St Peter Road.

On a breezy, sunny day, the riders found that they did not have much help from the breeze, it seems to be a head wind all the way round.

Like the weather, it was a good day for the North Road. Brian Robertson, riding his first open event for seventeen years, flew around the course coming past the finishing line in 1:17:23, followed by Tony Bradford in 1:22:36 with roadman Hayden Groves - first time trial since 2000, coming in with a time of 1:23:36, to take the first team of three honours with a total of 4:03:35 beating another local team Verulam Cycling Club by about three minutes. The winner of the event was Michael Broadwith (Race Scene CC) in a fantastic time of 1:12:14 pipping Colin Roshier (Team Quest/The Bike Shop) by 22 seconds.

Richard Somerset, suffering from a cold and Jim Ewers had to retire.
